Jerrell and Wyatt Maxwell were able to run the ball well, but closer to the goal line the offense couldn’t put it in the end zone.

The Wolverines and the Newton Eagles had a tough battle on Saturday night. The Wolverines took an early lead when the RB Kody Deckard took a toss and passed it 40 yards to Tyrese Blain (Orion Roshel Kick failed). The play was well executed by the line as Blain was wide open for the score. The Eagles responded with a passing TD of their own as QB Colton Goode found Trenton Duncan for an 85 yard pitch and catch.

The second quarter saw the Wolverines retake the lead on a Deckard 35 yard run to the outside. The Wolverines kept the lead and got the ball back before the end of the half up 12-6. The Wolverine offense took a shot deep down field for Blain that went incomplete. With less than 30 seconds the Wolverines took to the air again with a pass intended for Conner Rollins, but was picked off and returned 40 yards for a TD by the Eagles’ Duncan. The extra point attempt failed and the score at halftime was 12-12.

The 2nd half saw some back and forth action with no real threats until the Wolverines started a long drive. This drive ended with a 3 yard TD run by FB Blake Chatman. The extra point was good by Roshel and the Wolverines took the lead 20-12. After some trying by the Eagles offense coming up empty, the Wolverines took the victory by the final score of 20-12.

The Wolverines are 5-1 and are in 2nd place of the league and are in good shape to make the playoffs.  They travel to Cumberland (IL) on Saturday.
